Important Disclaimer
Disclaimer: I must stress again that attempting this repair is highly dangerous for your laptop. One slip can destroy the bottom OLED screen or tear a vital ribbon cable, permanently ruining the device and voiding your warranty. The RAM cannot be upgraded under any circumstances. If you understand the extreme risks and still wish to proceed with upgrading the SSD only, here is a simplified step-by-step guide to the teardown process.
Tools You Will Need
-
Torx Screwdriver Set (specifically T5)
-
Small Phillips Screwdriver (PH0)
-
Plastic Pry Tools / Spudgers (Do not use metal)
-
Anti-static Wrist Strap (Highly recommended)
Step-by-Step SSD Replacement Guide
Phase 1: Opening the Chassis
-
Power Down: Completely shut down the laptop and unplug it from the charger.
-
Remove the Screws: Flip the laptop over so the bottom (the part that rests on the desk) is facing up. Remove the 12 Torx screws. You will need to open the kickstand to access the screws hidden beneath it, and pry off small rubber covers to find the hidden service screws.
-
Pry the Casing: Use a plastic pry tool to gently separate the bottom cover from the main chassis. Work your way slowly around the edges. Do not force it. 4. Disconnect the Battery: As soon as you have access to the internals, locate the battery cable connecting to the motherboard and carefully unplug it. This prevents accidental short circuits while you work.
Phase 2: Extracting the Motherboard
5. Detach Delicate Cables: Carefully lift the latches and disconnect the delicate ribbon cables. This includes the display cables for the bottom OLED screen, the Wi-Fi antennas, the speaker cables, and the fan cables.
6. Remove the Battery: Unscrew the Phillips screws holding the 75Wh battery in place and lift it out of the chassis.
7. Unscrew the Motherboard: Locate and remove all the screws securing the motherboard and the cooling system (fans/heatsinks) to the laptop frame.
8. Lift and Flip: Gently lift the entire motherboard assembly out of the laptop. The SSD slot is located on the underside of the motherboard, so you must carefully flip the board over to see it.
Phase 3: Swapping the SSD
9. Remove the Old SSD: Locate the M.2 SSD. Unscrew the single small Phillips screw holding it in place. The SSD will pop up at an angle; gently pull it straight out of the slot. Remove any thermal pads attached to it.
10. Install the New SSD: Slide your new M.2 2280 Gen 4 NVMe SSD into the slot at the same angle, press it down flat, and secure it with the screw. Apply a new thermal pad if your drive requires it for cooling.
Phase 4: Reassembly
11. Reverse the Process: Flip the motherboard back over, seat it carefully into the chassis, and secure it with its screws.
12. Reconnect Everything: Reinstall the battery, and meticulously plug in every single ribbon cable, antenna, and fan connector.
13. Final Button-Up: Plug the battery cable in last. Snap the bottom casing back onto the laptop and screw in all 12 Torx screws.
Note: After replacing the SSD, your laptop will have no operating system. You will need to use a USB flash drive with a Windows installation media to reinstall Windows and download the specific Asus Zenbook Duo drivers to get both screens working properly again.
