Apple’s New "Upgrade" Plan: Leasing Tech So You Can Afford More 3D Filament? 🍎🖨️

What’s up, AOP3D fam! We usually spend our time here dialing in retraction settings, leveling our print beds for the 400th time, and rescuing spaghetti-monster prints.

But today, we need to take a quick detour out of the workshop and over to Cupertino, because Apple just dropped a bomb on how we buy our tech.

They officially nuked their old iPhone Upgrade Program and replaced it with a brand-new setup creatively named... Apple Upgrade.

We suffered through the boring press releases so you didn't have to. Here is the pure, unfiltered breakdown of Tim Cook's new master plan, minus all the "synergistic customer experience" jargon.

Wait, So It’s a Rental Car Now? 🚗

Yep. Basically, Apple has teamed up with Klarna to turn your favorite gadgets into a leasing program. You don't own the hardware; you're just paying a monthly fee to use it.

While that sounds a bit crazy at first, think of it this way: instead of dropping a massive chunk of upfront cash on a new Mac, you can keep that cash in your wallet... and maybe finally buy that multi-color 3D printing system you've been drooling over. Priorities, right?

What Can You Actually Lease? 💻

Under the old system, Apple basically only cared about your phone. The new Apple Upgrade plan is tossing almost the entire ecosystem into the leasing pool. You can now get:

iPhones Starting at $17.99/month
Apple Watches Starting at $11.99/month
iPads Starting at $11.99/month
Macs Starting at $24.99/month

The Strings Attached (Because There Are Always Strings) 🪢

Before you rush to lease a fully spec’d out MacBook to slice your massive STL files, here’s what you actually need to know:

  • The Timeline: For iPhones and Watches, you’re locked in for 12 or 24 months. For the big screens (Macs and iPads), it’s a 24- to 36-month commitment.
  • No Safety Net Included: Unlike the old program, AppleCare+ isn't bundled into that nice, clean monthly price. So if you accidentally drop a wrench on your iPad while doing printer maintenance, you're on the hook unless you buy extra protection.
  • The Endgame: When your lease ends, you have three choices: toss the device back to Apple, trade it in for a newer model, or buy it out. The buyout price is just the original MSRP minus what you've already paid—so no, Apple isn't secretly scamming you with a markup at the end, other than standard interest.

The AOP3D Verdict ⚖️

Look, at the end of the day, hardware is just a tool we use to create awesome physical stuff. If renting a Mac for 25 bucks a month means you can run your CAD software smoothly while freeing up your hobby budget for resin, upgraded extruders, and pizza? It might actually be worth looking into.

Just don't forget to put a case on it. Seriously.
