Conquering the Dragon Realms
A standard playthrough simply isn't enough for a true dragon. This definitive, deep-dive masterclass will guide you past the credits and through the absolute maximum completion metrics of the original trilogy: 120% in Spyro 1, 100% in Spyro 2, and 117% in Spyro 3.
1. Advanced Core Mechanics
Reaching maximum completion requires flawless mastery of Spyro's physics. The game won't teach you these advanced techniques, but you will need them to clear the hardest realms.
The Supercharge Chain (The "Tree Tops" Maneuver)
In levels like Tree Tops and Haunted Towers, a single Supercharge ramp is not enough. You must chain your momentum. To do this, charge down a glowing ramp, jump off, and immediately land on a different ramp (often facing the opposite direction) without breaking your charge. Spyro will glow even brighter, indicating a massive increase in speed and jump distance. You can chain up to four ramps at once to cross previously impossible chasms.
The Charge-Glide Extension
Never glide from a standstill. By initiating a standard Charge attack immediately before pressing Jump, Spyro carries forward momentum into the air. Trigger your glide at the peak of this momentum-boosted jump to cover roughly 15% more distance than a standard jump-glide. This is mandatory for catching the egg thieves in Magic Crafters and Dream Weavers.
2. Spyro 1: The Road to 120%
Beating Gnasty Gnorc only grants you the standard ending. To unlock the fabled 120% completion rating, you must go above and beyond the required quotas. The true maximum stats for Spyro 1 are 80 Dragons, 12 Eggs, and 14,000 Gems.
The 100% Prerequisite
First, you must attain 100% completion in the standard realms. This requires collecting exactly 12,000 gems, rescuing all 80 dragons, and retrieving all 12 stolen eggs. Only then will the dragon mouth at the Gnasty's World hub open, revealing the portal to Gnasty's Loot.
Notorious Roadblocks to 100%
- Sunny Flight (Artisans): In the Artisan Home, jump on the five scattered stepping stones near the waterfall in rapid succession to reveal this hidden portal.
- Haunted Towers (Dream Weavers): The hardest dragon in the game (Copano) requires you to kiss a fairy for an enhanced flame, run up a supercharge ramp, chain it into a second hidden ramp, jump through a set of closing doors, and blast metal armor before the timer expires.
- The Lofty Castle Thief: You cannot catch the thief by chasing him. You must cut him off by leaping across the castle parapets counter-clockwise to intercept his patrol route.
Gnasty's Loot (Achieving 120%)
Gnasty's Loot is a sprawling, vertical vault containing the final 2,000 gems, bringing your total to 14,000. In this level, Spyro can fly freely, but his maximum altitude is dictated by the highest point of solid ground he has touched. You must chase down a series of four progressively faster airplane thieves, stealing their keys to unlock doors that lead higher up the vault. Reaching the pinnacle room and collecting the final purple gem triggers the 120% true ending.
3. Spyro 2: The 100% Superflame Run
Spyro 2 caps its completion at exactly 100%, requiring 10,000 Gems, 14 Talismans, and 64 Orbs. Earning this unlocks the most powerful permanent upgrade in the franchise.
The Orb Hunter's Guide
Unlike Spyro 1, you cannot 100% most levels on your first visit. You must purchase the Climbing and Headbash abilities from Moneybags in later hubs, then backtrack. Pay special attention to:
- Fracture Hills (The Alchemist & Hunter): You must escort the Alchemist through a gauntlet of Earthshapers, which requires memorizing his erratic path. Do not leave the level after doing this! You must immediately speak to Hunter to complete his follow-up minigame, or the Alchemist quest will reset upon leaving.
- Magma Cone (Popcorn Crystals): Hunter's crystal-catching minigame relies on watching the cracks in the ground. Stand dead center between three cracks to optimize your catching radius.
Dragon Shores and the Permanent Superflame
Once you defeat Ripto, you gain access to Dragon Shores. However, the final door in this theme park requires a perfect 100% save file (10,000 Gems / 64 Orbs) to open. Inside is the Superflame Powerup. Once collected, Spyro's standard breath is permanently replaced by rapid-fire, armor-piercing fireballs across your entire save file, even if you replay older levels.
4. Spyro 3: The 117% Finale
Year of the Dragon pushes the limits further. The standard game ends at 100%, but true masters know the cap is 117% (20,000 Gems and 150 Eggs).
| Completion Milestone | Total Eggs | Total Gems | Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defeat Sorceress (Base Game) | 100 | ~10,000 | Standard Ending / Midnight Mountain |
| 100% Base Completion | 149 | 15,000 | Access to Super Bonus Round Portal |
| 117% Absolute Max | 150 | 20,000 | True Ending / Final Boss Rematch |
Surviving the Super Bonus Round
Located in Midnight Mountain (across the pink slime river), this hidden hub requires exactly 149 Eggs and 15,000 Gems to enter. Inside, you must navigate a massive gauntlet to collect the final 5,000 gems. It features the four hardest minigames in the trilogy:
- Thief Chariot Race: A brutal skateboard race where you must chain continuous tricks off ramps to maintain a permanent turbo boost.
- Submarine Combat: You must pilot a sub through a toxic maze, relying entirely on torpedo trajectory prediction.
- Twin Dragon Dogfight: A chaotic aerial battle requiring mastery of the permanent Superflight mechanic.
Collecting all 20,000 gems opens the final vault. Inside, you face the Sorceress in a UFO dogfight rematch. Defeating her yields the 150th Egg, the 117% completion screen, and the true ending cinematic.
5. Skill Points & The Epilogues
If 120% wasn't enough, Spyro 2 and 3 feature hidden "Skill Points". These are undocumented challenges that do not count toward your completion percentage, but are required for ultimate bragging rights.
The Hardest Skill Points to Claim
- Perfect (Spyro 2): Defeat Gulp without taking a single hit of damage. Tip: You can use your permanent Superflame (unlocked at 100%) to melt his health bar instantly, bypassing the intended mechanics entirely.
- Skateboard Record (Spyro 3): Score over 10,000 points in 2 minutes in the Lost Fleet skate park. Tip: Chain a "Gnarsty Gnorc" (front flip + multiple spins) off the highest half-pipe for massive score multipliers.
Acquiring all skill points unlocks the Epilogue pages in the main menu—a series of artwork detailing the fate of the characters after the games end.
