What Is the "Fighting Charizard" Error and How Did It Happen?

When Wizards of the Coast (WotC) released Gym Challenge in late 2000, it introduced cards belonging to iconic Kanto Gym Leaders. Blaine, the Cinnabar Island Gym Leader specializing in Fire types, naturally received the set's ultimate flagship chase card: Blaine’s Charizard.

How did a rock-and-ground symbol make its way onto a flying dragon?

• The Graphic Layout Mix-Up: During translation and card layout from the Japanese release, a WotC graphic editor loaded the wrong energy icon from their graphic asset library into the text box for the "Roaring Flames" attack.
• The Typo Breakdown: The text reads: "Discard all Fire Energy cards attached to Blaine's Charizard... This attack does 20 damage plus 20 more damage for each [Fighting Energy] discarded in this way." Instead of referencing Fire Energy, the second sentence accidentally placed a Fighting Energy symbol.
• The Capitalization Oversight: As an added bonus, the word "energy" in the first line was printed with an accidental lowercase "e" ("Discard all Fire energy cards..."), breaking standard WotC formatting rules.
• Massive 1st Edition Output: Because the error wasn't noticed before printing began, every single 1st Edition Blaine’s Charizard ever printed contains this Fighting Energy mistake.

The Collector's Angle: The Wild Rarity Reversal

In most TCG misprint situations, the card with the mistake is the ultra-scarce chase piece, while the "corrected" version is common bulk. But Blaine’s Charizard turns this rule completely on its head!
