A Formatting Fiasco

To understand this anomaly, all you have to do is look at the top right corner of almost any Base Set Pokémon card. In the early days of the English TCG, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) established a strict formatting rule for a Pokémon's health: the numerical value always came first, followed by the letters "HP" (e.g., 50 HP).

However, Vulpix somehow slipped through the cracks. Here is how this formatting blunder became the rule rather than the exception:

• The Original Typo: On the very first English printing plates, the text for Vulpix was accidentally swapped to read "HP 50".
• The Ignored Mistake: This typo was printed on the historic 1st Edition run. Then it was printed on the Shadowless run. Then, it was printed on the massive, standard Unlimited run.
• The Base Set 2 Blunder: Incredibly, when WotC reprinted the card a year later for the Base Set 2 expansion, they still didn't fix it. The "HP 50" text survived an entirely new set release!

Because this typo was present across tens of millions of cards printed between 1999 and 2000, the "HP 50" Vulpix is arguably one of the most heavily printed "errors" in the history of trading card games.
